Bwiti “Soki” – small ceremonial rattle

 100

The Soki is a traditional ceremonial rattle used frequently in the Bwiti tradition.

Description

The Soki is a traditional ceremonial rattle used frequently in the Bwiti tradition. Almost every time the Ngomo harp is played, someone accompanies it with the steady sound of the Soki.

Its monotone, hypnotic rhythm runs in the background of nearly all Bwiti music, creating a subtle, satisfying vibration.

Handcrafted by local Bwiti artisans, the Soki is made from two round dried fruits filled with small black seeds that produce its distinctive sound.

Beyond music, the Soki is also used during prayers and rituals. It is typically held in the right hand while the left hand carries the Mbounda whisk broom. The Mbounda represents gentle feminine energy and acts as a receiver of subtle forces, while the Soki projects a stronger, masculine energy, symbolically serving as a transmitter.

You can use it in a similar way as described for your own ceremonies and rituals. For a complete ceremonial experience, we recommend pairing the Soki rattle with the Mbounda.
